Expressing Unique Creativity Through Bullet Journaling

Introduction:

Hi! I’m Clara (@journalsbyclara), a first-year college student in the United States! While I’ve always had a passion for art and design from a young age, I didn’t even know what bullet journaling was until about 3 years ago. What I loved most about it is that you can incorporate simple art into your daily life while staying organized. But how do you start? Honestly, when I first started bullet journaling, I had no idea what types of spreads to make. I was simply copying other bullet journalists on YouTube and Instagram. Over time, I learned to develop my own style and incorporate my interests and inspirations into bullet journaling. So, here are some of my favorite tips to express unique creativity through your journal:

1. Create based on real-life inspirations/experiences

Throughout my bullet journal, you’ll find pictures and drawings of many of my interests and favorite things, whether that’s food, clothes, or music. It’s important that you make your bullet journal unique to YOU, and pulling inspiration from your own life is the easiest way to do this. For example, I often calligraphy my favorite song’s lyrics for each week, or sometimes I draw a quick sketch of an outfit that I like. Whatever it is that you have an interest in, incorporate it into your journal!! It makes bullet journaling so much more fun because you’re making something that you like and something that captures your character.

2. Find inspiration from Pinterest

After making bullet journal spread after bullet journal spread, it’s easy to run out of ideas. When this happens, I often turn to one of my favorite apps/websites, Pinterest, for inspiration. Sometimes I have absolutely no ideas running through my head, so I’ll search up “aesthetic pictures” or “cute organization” on Pinterest, and this gives me ideas, especially for monthly cover pages. For my July 2021 cover page, I simply saw a picture of abandoned ruins of a castle and ran with the idea. In my final cover page, I used the aesthetic of castle ruins paired with greenery to make a nature-y piece. Even from a simple picture, so many ideas can stem from it. Sometimes it just takes a bit of time to sort through ideas.

3. Use your favorite color palettes

Colors have such a huge effect on the aesthetic of your bullet journal, so don’t forget to express yourself through color! Personally, I like neutral to warm shades like sage green, beige, and muted yellow because they give off a cozy, earthy vibe. Maybe if you prefer a soft and calming vibe, you can incorporate pastel yellow, blue, and pink into your bullet journal. If you struggle with finding nice color palettes, try searching for some on Pinterest!

While these are the 3 main tips I follow to maintain unique creativity through bullet journaling, there is no set way of approaching bullet journaling.

Creativity is creativity. In the end, do what comes naturally to you, but don’t hesitate to try something new and find alternative ways of expressing yourself!
